Of

It is witching hour…

Total silence. I sit here in my living room with 7 black candles illuminating the scenery. I feel strange. Someone who’s dear to me passed away last Monday. Never met the poor guy nor did I have any personal contact with him, but his music was (and still is) pure magic.

Yes, the one who died is Quorthon. The tall guy who was responsible for creating such marvelous records as “ Under the Sign of the Black Mark”, “ Hammerheart”, “The Return…”, “Blood, Fire, Death” and many more. I guess you know them all. At the young age of 39 Quorthon passed away in his apartment in Stockholm, Sweden.

When I first heard the news from my friend Costa I couldn’t believe it. More and more websites were mentioning the terrible news, yet still I didn’t and couldn’t accept it as the truth. ‘Till yesterday. Both the websites bathory.se and Black Mark published a photo and the lyrics to the song “Hammerheart” in memory of Quorthon. That was it… It was over now.

I’ve seen many people die and often it didn’t really affect me that much. I don’t know why, but this time it was different. Quorthon, who’s records helped me through hard times and always gave me the right energy at the right moment was no more. At that moment I felt very depressed. It felt like having lost a friend or an ally. Another icon of our beloved metal scene was gone.

Yes, I know. Only Death is real, right? A quote from a band Quorthon never enjoyed. Death and life are connected like night and day. There’s no way around it. Everybody has to go… somehow, sometime and somewhere. But why so soon, why now? No one will answer my question. Nor the wind, earth, sea or fire can give me the knowledge. I am just a mere mortal, ha…so I have to deal with it. Will there be “The Return…”? I don’t think so. It is an interesting tale, but this is the real thing.

Quorthon, we never met each other, but I want to tell you this. I hail you for making it possible to embrace such an entity as Bathory with my whole heart. Thank you for the enrichment of my life. It was truly worth every second listing to your creations. The golden walls of heaven may be yours and the goat…well, may it watch over your dedicated disciples. They’ll keep you in an utmost respected memory…

So, it is time to blow out the 7 candles…of Doom!

Hail the hordes!!!

Wannes

Important Pentacle news!

Misc
Important Pentacle news! The upcoming album will be released through the German label Iron Pegasus Records. Some people already expected this, but now it is official. We’re happy to work with Costa again. As some of you know he already released our split 10” with Desaster some years ago. He also arranged the booklet for the “Ancient Death” MLP. Each time it was a pleasure to work with him. He is 100% dedicated to the scene and has released many outstanding albums of bands like Desaster, Zemial, Hadez, Mortuary Drape, Sadistic Intent, Beherit, Sabbat and many more. We are truly convinced we have found the right label for our Metal madness! The cooperation with Iron Pegasus Records will have the positive outcome of three formats of the new album: CD, limited LP and limited PD.

Again, Harrow Productions in Losser (The Netherlands) has been chosen as recording studio. The recordings will take place in September and October. We hope to record 10 or 11 new songs.

Former Order From Chaos- and current Ares Kingdom-guitarist Chuck Keller has contributed a track which will be featured on the new album. You can expect something a bit different from the normal Pentacle material, but be aware this song is not a filler! It will give the album an extra impulse of old school energy. Thanks in advance for the great song, Chuck!

Manuel Tinnemans, who was also responsible for the covers of “…Rides the Moonstorm”, “Ancient Death” and the upcoming “Archaic Undead Fury” split with Blood Storm, will again take care of the artwork. He has promised us a masterpiece! We didn’t expect anything else…

For the tape maniacs among you, we have some copies of “…Rides the Moonstorm” available for you again. This release was made possible through Witchhammer Productions from Thailand. Check the merchandise.

Updates concerning our upcoming releases

Misc
And the deed has been done... Many hails are going out to the people involved in our last gig with Mortem. You maniacs from Germany, Spain, USA and of course the proud bangers from Holland made it happen again!!! Thanks for supporting us and keeping the flame alive! You truely rule! As before we would like to thank Mortem for their great gig. Although playing as a trio you guys raged supreme! Next time we are going to do "Zombie Ritual" together! Death reigns supreme! Respect to a band with real dedication towards Death Metal, the ancient way!!! Stick together and get us some new material!!!

Here are some updates concerning our upcoming releases. The last news related to the Necrovore I received was that only Throneum and Pentacle actually have recorded their coverversions. Thornspawn is now recording "Mutilated Death", while Abominator, Blood Storm and Morbosidad still have to enter the studio. Still no news about Headhunter D.C. It seems even Immolation was being mentioned to record a version of "Slaughtered Remains", but I don't if this will work out. Should be great of course.

The split 10" with Blood Storm is progressing though. The posters are ready and have been sent to the Metal War headquaters. The actual pressing should start this week and the vinyl sound be ready in 3 weeks. Let's hope it'll work out!

Studio report

Misc

Mike Wannes Alex Robert
We have returned from our studio- sessions at the Double Noise Studios, Tilburg. The recordings went really well. We recorded 8 new songs and Necrovore's "Divus de Mortuus". It was the first time we worked with Gerben, who was in his early days the guitarist of the local band Excision. A band with whom we have shared many stages. As he knew Pentacle for many years now (he even joined us on stage for one gig to play some songs with us when I had injured my finger and couldn't play bass) we had full confidence in him for puting the right sound down on "tape". On the first day we set up our gear, did the soundcheck and recorded 5 songs. The next day we did the remaining 4 and did some extra guitars after which I did the vocals. I tried some different things, but all in all it went pretty fast. Then we started working on the sound of the several instruments (Gerben had already done a lot of work during the different stages of the recording...). First it was the drumkit and some bassguitar. The next day we continued with the bass after which we did the guitars. The vocals where the last thing we worked on. Then the mixing for "Divus..." started. This and the mastering took the whole day. There were some technical problems with Gerben's computer, but after some time he figured out what it was and we could continue. In the meanwhile it was almost 23.00 hours and we had to quit. After 3 days hard work the session ended. It was a good experience for all the 4 of us as we hadn't recorded anything with this line-up. The atmosphere was pretty relaxed and everyone did his utmost best to make it all work. The only real setback we experienced was that I could only record the vocals for the Necrovore song as time was running out for us. I had hoped to record every day some tracks, but soundchecking took more time than expected. As usual we had not enough time to record everything we wanted. It's not really a problem as the recordings (except for "Divus...") won't be released at all, though it would have helped me a lot. It is just great to hear our new songs recorded in a decent way, so they can blast they way they are intended to. At last we have some very good recordings to work with and to prepare us 100% for the upcoming album. Way better than using the old cassette! Way more expensive too...

Possessed tribute "Seven Gates of Horror" is soon to be released
printer friendly
Misc
Call me misinformed or rather not informed at all, but I was quite suprised to read a review on the Voices from the Darkside Website that the Possessed tribute "Seven Gates of Horror" is soon to be released on the Dutch label Karmageddon Media. I didn't even knew this label was going to release the album at all and it seems it will be available next week too! What a suprise! I guess Dark Realm is going to cover both the North- and Southern American territory, but I don't know this for sure. For those who have missed the line-up, here it is:

1. Sadistic Intent (with Jeff Becerra) - "The Exorcist"
2. Impious - "Fallen Angel"
3. Cannibal Corpse - "Confessions"
4. Pentacle - "The Beasts of the Apocalypse"
5. Vader - "Death Metal"
6. Diabolic - "No Will to Live"
7. God Dethroned - "Satan's Curse"
8. Absu - "Swing of the Axe"
9. Sinister - "Storm in My Mind"
10. Angel Corpse - "Burning in Hell"
11. Krabathor - "Evil Warriors"
12. Houwitser - "March to Die"
13. Amon Amarth - "The Eyes of Horror"

I wonder why a band like Hypnosia (RIP) isn't included at all as they recorded "My Belief" for this purpose too. Anyway, this record will be available on February the 23rd. At last, GET IT!!!!!!!!!!

Greetings and thank you Maniacs!

Greetings Maniacs!

I would like to thank everybody involved in the Voices from the Darkside festival. Hails to Frank Stöver (first time in 10 years!!!), Count Gothmog, Ramon Claassen, Ingurgitating Obliveon (thanks for the backline!), Bloody Sign (it was great meeting you again Nathaniel!), Pavor, Secrets of the Moon, Morrigan and Dew Scented. Thanks to Martin van Drunen for joining us on stage to perform "Witch of Hell". Nice to have you back! And not to forget the fans who raged the whole festival!!! Thanks for staying until the end and keeping supporting us, even when there was no beer anymore!!! It was a great happening and we enjoyed it a lot. We are very sorry we had to shorten our set with 5 songs. The festival was going late and we had to end our set premature because of the curfew. We really would have liked to play some other tunes for you, but that wasn't possible anymore. I hope nobody is angry because of this, but it was out of our hands. Anyway, thanks for everything!!!!

At the end of this month we are going to record a demo with all our new songs, including Necrovore's "Divus de Mortuus". This recording will take place at the Double Noise Studio, Tilburg. The purpose of this session is more of a personal matter. We are not going to release these recordings. We want to check out the new material in the studio before the real album is going to be recorded. More like a pre-recording. It'll be interesting for Alex too, because it will be his first studio-experience. We are really looking forward to hear our new songs in a studio-environment.

When everything will work out as we want to we'll have another gig with Peru's Death Metal gods Mortem! Again, this gig will take place in De Pazzop, Bladel at Saturday March the 20th. Things are looking pretty bright right now, so let's hope everything goes well. Pulmonary Abcess will be support for this gig.
